The Goulburn Post seems to be mysteriously evasive about publishing the exact location of this proposed waste station.
This is particularly strange since the location is the single most controversial issue.
The community is not opposed to the idea of a waste transfer station. They are opposed to the location. Once they are informed of it, nearly all question the sense of it and feel opposed to it.
The Post did finally publish a large article with many of our concerns on Friday Sept 30. Most of the article was from the press release that Richard Orchard sent in about two weeks earlier.
It seemed to us that they were not going to print the press release at all till we put pressure on them through the Press Council.
The Post claims that they were going to publish it, and were just waiting to get verification of it from someone in the opposition group, but we don't feel very confident of their defense. I myself asked Richard if he had heard from the Post and he said no. This was about one week after he sent it to Louise Thrower. Maybe there was just a communication problem, but we feel increasingly skeptical about how the Post is reporting this, or failing to.
In any case the article from the 30th is available at the library. I think it is on page 2 or 3. (They chose not to put it online for all to easily access. They did however put the Council's side of the story online.)
By their last coverage of the issue on Sept30th, they still were not specifying the exact location.
They keep saying Bridge Street, but almost no one knows where that is.
Even Google doesn't know where Bridge Street is! See the link below for proof of that.
In one of their two articles on the 30th they called the site "an old fuel depot" making it sound as if it had no value to the public.
Nor are they calling attention to the fact that the site is on the northern entrance to town and opposite a large public green space - IE the one behind Bob Rudd funeral home and the Southern Star Inn.
Nor have they said that the site is less than 100 meters from the river.
There are other concerns we have with the Post. I may be meeting with the Post editor, Gerard Walsh, on the 17th to discuss these. If we meet I will let you all know.
In the mean time, please continue to contact the chair of the JRPP - pamallan@gmail.com with your concerns and send a copy to us at goulburnbotanicalgarden@gmail.com or post it here.
Thanks.
